Exhaust Gas Analysis and Emissions Testing

This week our team had the pleasure of delivering specialised equipment to Rodin Cars in the beautiful South Island..

We installed a PMU-400 particle counter, AGS690 5 gas exhaust gas analyser and the MGT-300 EVO remote oil temp and RPM sensor to David Dicker at Rodin cars for the purpose of ensuring their 4.0 litre V10 race engines can meet the UK IVA emissions standards. I could talk all day about how impressive the manufacturing facility is and the fact that they manufacture formula 1 level track car engines on site only is only outshone by the fact they make the rest of the formula 1 level track cars there as well.  We can't wait to go back!

Mahle PMU-400 Particle Counter measuring tool

Mahle’s headline for the PMU-400 tells us counting particles is the new frontier of emissions control.

Particulate matter emitted from motor vehicle exhausts, both petrol and diesel, is known to have a negative impact on air quality and our health. The nanoparticles emitted can easily enter the human body and the long term effects from exposure to these particles adds pressure to health systems.

Euro 5 diesels and Euro 6.2 petrol vehicles are fitted with particulate filters to reduce the exhaust pipe particle count by at least a factor of 1000.

As with the implementation of more emissions control systems, in time we need to test that they are doing their job optimally. Previously for diesel engines it was an opacity test that measured the smoke emitted by the colour of it. In Europe it has been shown that most diesel Euro 5 and Euro 6 cars with faulty or tampered DPF’s still emitted a lower than legal limit under free acceleration tests leaving the opacimeter ineffective on new generation vehicles.

Now there is a tool available to measure particulate matter emissions from diesel and petrol engines we are able to accurately test for particulate filter function.

Mahle AGS690 Petrol engine exhaust gas analyser.

The Mahle AGS690 is an exhaust gas analyser for measuring CO, CO2, HC and O2 and comes with the option to add a NOX sensor making it a 5 gas analyser. Teamed up with the MGT-300 EVO remote oil temperature and RPM sensors, the AGS690 is the most comprehensive tool available for testing exhaust gases during inspections, servicing, diagnostics and tuning.

Both tools are separate in function, but can be run from the same software on one laptop and when combined set the benchmark in proof of exhaust gas emissions.

Not only are the two able to be used in continuous testing mode to provide long run results for diagnostics and tuning but they can also be set up to meet official testing requirements for a range of European countries.

For the automotive repair sector, we can rely on fault codes to tell us something is amiss, we can scan for live data and even scope for proof that sensors, actuators and networks are operating but when it comes down to brass tacks, there is no more accurate way to know how well a vehicle is performing than by measuring exactly what it is emitting from the tail pipe.
